The philosopher Eric Hoffer is probably unknown to most business managers. That is more than a bit of a shame. There is one quote in particular of Hoffer’s, that is a favorite of mine. It is a quote that is particularly useful for a small business manager to keep in mind. The quote is: “In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.”
As we all deal with COVID, this quote takes on a particularly poignant importance. Are you learned or are you a learner? Are you going to depend on models that you learned in school – or even models that you learned in one of our books - or are you going to be learning new ideas, conducting new trials, implementing new processes?
This is not abstract philosophy – this may be the difference between success and failure.
